Alisi Tupuailei crossed for a hat-trick as Japan overwhelmed Russia with a 75-3 victory at Prince Chichibu Stadium, Tokyo, on Saturday.

John Kirwan's Japanese team bounced back from their 13-10 defeat to Samoa last week, which saw them shut out in the second-half, to score 11 tries as they routed the emerging nation and gave coach Steve Diamond an idea of how far his charges need to go ahead of next year's Rugby World Cup.

Wing Tupuailei opened the scoring in the opening minutes and his side never looked back. Fly-half Bryce Robins and outside-centre Koji Taira scored two tries each.

Fullback Atsushi Tanabe converted 10 of them to score 20 points while the visitors managed to score one penalty through scrumhalf Alexander Yanytushkin at the end of the first half to escape a whitewash.
