The United States head into their clash with Italy at Trafalgar Park on Tuesday looking for their first win over the Azzuri.

Italy have won the only two matches between the nations with victories in 1991 and 2004. The Azzuri were convincing winners when the two sides met at Otley in the pool stages of the 1991 Rugby World Cup. Tries from Stefano Barba, Paolo Vaccari, Fabio Gaetaniello and Ivan Francescato, along with 14 points from the boot of Diego Dominguez gave Italy a 30-9 victory.

When the teams faced each other again 13 years later, little had changed. Italy again ran out comfortable 43-25 winners in Biella-in-Piedmont. Kaine Robertson scored two tries while Cristian Stoica, Luciano Orquera and Walter Pozzebon also touched down. Fly-half Orquera finished with a personal haul of 20 points after also landing three penalties and three conversions.
