South Africa's Francois Hougaard has one World Rugby's try of the year for his effort in South Africa's win over New Zealand in Johannesburg in October.

Hougaard dived under the posts in the 12th minute at Ellis Park to finish off a quite spectacular move that had started in South Africa's 22.

"It was a fantastic try," World Rugby chairman Bernard Lapasset said. "It started from deep within the Springboks' own 22. There was wonderful elusive running, lightning passing, rapid recycling, a deft kick ahead, which was expertly gathered and then a well-timed run from Francois finished it off in style.

"It was a real team effort that demonstrated ambition, enterprise and no little skill against the No 1 side in the world. In short, it was a try that was truly deserving of this accolade."

The scrum-half follows his countrymen Jaque Fourie (2009) and Bryan Habana (2012) in winning the award.

Hougaard saw off competition from England's Jonny May, Canada's Magali Harvey, Jamie Roberts of Wales and his own team-mate Cornal Hendricks.

The panel that made the decision was made up of former Scotland fly-half Dan Parks, Samoa's Seilala Mapusua, ex-New Zealand wing Jeff Wilson and Ireland's Alan Quinlan.
