The average wage budget in the Top 14 rose to €7.4m last season with the clubs in the top two leagues running a collective deficit of nearly €34m.

The figures are from a report carried out by financial watchdog 'Direction nationale d'aide et de contrôle de gestion', an organisation joint run by LNR - the body in charge of the Top 14 - and the FFR - the union for French rugby.

The collective deficit is the most alarming figure from the report with it showing an increase from €32.5m in 2012-13 to €33.9m last season. According to Midi Olympique, Racing Metro, Stade Francais and Castres have contributed just over half of that. The report also said Toulon and Brive are the only Top 14 clubs to post a profit.

The report also showed the average Top 14 club was spending €7.4m on player wages last season which is a €1m up on the 2012-13 campaign. The average budget for a Top 14 club was €21.2m last term with the highest coming in at €35m.
