Wales scrum-half Rhys Webb has been ruled out of Warren Gatland's squad for the Rugby World Cup with a foot injury. The WRU confirmed the news on Twitter, adding that Mike Phillips and Eli Walker have been called up, the latter as a replacement for Leigh Halfpenny, who was ruled out on Monday evening.

Webb requires further assessments on both his foot and knee before a decision can be made on whether he will need surgery. He tweeted his disappointment:

Both Webb and Halfpenny were injured in Saturday's narrow victory over Italy at the Millennium Stadium, the final match of Wales' preparations for the Rugby World Cup. Their first match of the tournament is a week on Sunday against Uruguay.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland said: "It is extremely disappointing for both Leigh and Rhys.

"They have worked exceptionally hard to establish themselves on the world stage and to prepare for the tournament and we wish them all the best with their recovery.

"After announcing the squad we spoke about the need for players to remain ready for action and it is a great opportunity for Mike and Eli.

"It's great that we can call on players of this calibre. To bring Mike's experience into the squad is a bonus along with Eli's exciting talent."
