An MP has called for ticket touting to be made illegal at next year's Rugby World Cup amid reports £350 tickets for the final are already being offered online for £8050 even though tickets do not go on sale until the autumn.

At present only events designated as being a "competition of national significance" receive legal protection from touts and that does not include the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Clive Efford, the shadow sports minister, is urging the government to take steps to include it. He told the Sunday Telegraph: "If the government refuses to act, tickets will be hoovered up by organised gangs of touts and genuine fans will be forced to pay extortionate prices in the secondary market."

If the tournament was given legal protection it would mean no ticket could be re-sold for a profit and all unwanted tickets would need to be passed back to the organisers for re-sale.

Efford will move an amendment to the Consumer Rights Bill which is passing through parliament at the moment.

A search of the internet reveals tickets for all matches right through to the final being offered for sale with prices up to 20 times the face value.
