Wallabies back Rob Horne is reportedly being sized up by Irish club Munster as the two-time European champions search for a replacement for JJ Hanrahan.

A report in The Independent on Thursday said Horne was at the top of Munster's list but suggested All Blacks utility Ben Smith had also been sounded out.

Horne reinvented himself as a winger under Waratahs coach Michael Cheika in 2014, leading to a Test recall first under former coach Ewen McKenzie during the Rugby Championship. The 25-year-old also started against England in the final Test of the Wallabies' spring tour under Cheika.

The 25-Test veteran is originally a centre by trade, making him an ideal candidate to take over from Hanrahan who is off to Northampton at the end of the season.

The Wallabies are facing a mass exodus after this year's World Cup with Adam Ashley-Cooper and former skipper James Horwill having already confirmed their departures while Will Genia, Israel Folau and Quade Cooper have also been linked with European clubs.
