Main Issues

The issues facing French rugby go far deeper than merely what squad Philippe Saint-Andre will pick for the Rugby World Cup. A shrinking player pool has clearly not been kind on the former Sale coach, but that said, in four years at the helm of the national team, he has been unable to implement a clear strategy for success. Like predecessor Marc Lievremont four years ago, the coach has put his faith in experience ahead of the tournament, yet if their performance against England last Saturday can be used as a reliable barometer he might just be pulling the squad together at the right time.

Squad Strength

Saint-Andre resisted the temptation to pick an oversized training squad, and his decision to leave out the likes of Camille Lopez at first invited derision. However, while their display at Twickenham was by no means perfect, there appeared to be a spirit within the group that was certainly missing during the Six Nations. The team that was picked to face England were underdogs, yet the likes of Scott Spedding and Remi Lamerat suggested they have a future at Test level. If Saint-Andre can get the best out of an experienced pack, then Les Bleus become a more potent proposition.

Injury Concerns

Captain Thierry Dusautoir is France's only injury doubt, and he will again miss the return match with England in Paris this weekend. SĂ©bastien Tillous-Borde and Pascal Pape had been on the treatment table, but are expected to be fit enough to take part on Saturday.

What are the locals saying

"It was expected to be a duel between two "bulldozers" at Twickenham, and Louis Picamoles eclipsed his English rival [Ben Morgan]. The back-row was the most prominent French player on the field. He is still as tough as always and could break the gainline but he also identified opportunities for his team-mates. He has been the player who has most impressed the French staff since the beginning of their preparation. Against England, the Toulouse No.8 delivered a convincing performance and is installed as one of France's indispensable players ahead of the Rugby World Cup." - Tanguy Hamon, RugbyRama
