Free practice 2

Welcome back to ESPNF1's live coverage of the second practice session for the Brazilian Grand Prix. It's the final 90 minutes of Friday running this season, and could be the last session of 2011 run in the dry if the weather forecast is accurate...

If you weren't with us for the first session, Mark Webber was quickest as just 0.214s separated the top four drivers

With five replacement drivers taking part in FP1, the likes of Tonio Liuzzi had to find something else to do with their time this morning:

This second session will see Liuzzi return to his HRT, with Jarno Trulli, Adrian Sutil, Vitaly Petrov and Sebastien Buemi also back in their respective cars

If you want to get in touch with us during FP2 you can do so in one of two ways. Either drop us an email using the link above, or send us a message via Twitter @ESPNF1_live

It was a tough morning for Fernando Alonso, whose Ferrari engine expired on the pit straight. Being Friday it was an old one, but will mean the race engine gets used earlier than desired

OK, it might not be hugely important with regards to this session, but British artist Jessie J (who played F1 Rocks last night) has just walked through the paddock in a very garish catsuit. Cue a serious frown from Laurence to my left

Anyway, back to the cars. Mark Webber jumps in to his Red Bull, and he'll be looking to build on his work this morning. We will get to see soft tyre runs this afternoon so will get a better idea of raw pace

Speaking of the soft tyres Pirelli has brought a development compound which is being used all weekend, including for the race

Kovalainen leads a train of cars out on track including Alguersuari, Trulli, Liuzzi and Buemi

There are a number of new helmet designs today, and we've just noticed another one; Lewis Hamilton has the Brazilian flag on the top of his helmet

Eager to get on with things, everyone has remained on track to set a time. Alguersuari quickest with a 1:17.316

Quickly beaten by Perez on a 1:16.712

It's a pleasantly warm afternoon in Sao Paulo, with air temperature at 26C. Tomorrow, however, thundery showers are forecast, and it looks like being a wet race on Sunday too

Good save from Timo Glock as his Virgin tries to snap away from him in turn 6 and just as it looks like the car will spin he manages to hold it and make the apex

Glock really appears to be having some issues, this time locking up and losing the rear end in to Bico de Pato

Button goes quickest with a 1:15.190, half a second faster than Alonso

Hamilton goes second. He's on the medium tyre, and we're unlikely to see the soft compound until much later in the session

Hamilton improves on the next lap, comfortably quickest now on a 1:13.852

Alonso runs wide at Ferradura - turn 6 - as he struggles to get the car to turn in on the medium tyre

The two compounds available for the race are the medium and soft tyre, while teams also have a development hard tyre to run today

Petrov tells Renault that the car is "oversteering like hell". If he wants that fixing he'll have to hope he hasn't annoyed too many with his outburst in Abu Dhabi

@ribf1 on Twitter asks: "which of the tyres were made use of during FP1?"

Only the medium and developmental hard tyres were used during the first session

@varadhjain on Twitter asks: "Do you think Kimi will race again? #keepingiticecold :)"

Personally Varadh I do, I think he wants to come back enough to be able to get a drive soon, though whether that is with Williams in 2012 or another team a year later remains to be seen

Gasps all round as Massa loses the rear under braking as he tries to pass Trulli at Laranja. A gesture from Massa displays his annoyance, but an onboard replay shows that it wasn't actually as close as first appeared

Massa is fourth quickest incidentally, with Alonso in the pits after only completing seven laps so far

Button has improved his best time, and is now only 0.046s slower than his team-mate

Perez takes too much kerb at Laranja and even puts two wheels on the grass on the inside of the track. The kerbs are very flat here but that was taking it to the extreme

Alonso really struggling with the rear of his car as it again tries to get away from him in Ferrardura and Laranja. Braking and turning there is proving to be a real challenge

Glock is showing as stopped on the timing screens... it could be a false alarm though as drivers practice starts at the end of the pit lane

And it no longer shows him having stopped, so no dramas for the Virgin

Kovalainen begins a new lap. He's running a new rear wing and seems happy with the car as Lotus (MyTeamLotus) says on Twitter: "Heikki's feedback from his earlier run: "Stability better, braking stability more neutral, high-speed quite stable" So it's stable then!"

Alonso up to sixth, 0.2s slower than Massa

Senna is on the soft tyres, and he has not done this set any favours by locking up in to Bico de Pato

Senna goes 10th with that lap

Ferrari (InsideFerrari) on Twitter: "Still working on the set-up the car to find a better balance"

Rosberg also on the soft tyres now, but he gets blocked a bit by d'Ambrosio and has to back off

Senna seventh on a second run on the softs, a second off the pace of Hamilton

Looks like the softs giving up a bit of life after two runs, as Senna runs wide at Descida do Lago

Schumacher also on the softs, and he sets the fastest middle and final sectors on his way to the fastest time so far; a 1:13.723

Barrichello has just started a run on the soft tyres, which match his Senna-esque helmet pretty nicely

Massa goes fifth, while di Resta and Kobayashi both outbrake themselves in to Descida do Lago

Rosberg got a clean run in on his softs to go third - 0.149s slower than Schumacher - while Button has now started a lap on soft tyres

Button can only go second quickest having lost 0.2s in the final sector. It appears that it takes two laps to really get the tyres working, although Hamilton sets the fastest first sector on his first lap

Hamilton just goes quickest, 0.070s faster than Schumacher. He also lost about 0.2s in the final sector

Second lap and Hamilton sets the fastest first two sectors. Again he's 0.2s down on Schumacher in the final sector but he improves to a 1:13.392

The quickest times have been set on the second run on soft tyres, with one slow lap between the flying laps

Alonso goes third, 0.340s slower than Hamilton

Webber goes second, before Vettel just beats his time. Still 0.167s off Hamilton's pace though

Alonso improves on his second flying lap to a 1:13.598

Work going on at Ferrari, with Massa's rear wing off the car

The lower fuel runs appear to be over, only the two Renaults and d'Ambrosio are improving

We're on to the long runs, as Force India confirms on Twitter: "20 mins of the session remaining. Now time for long runs on the soft tyre - starting with Paul who is out on track."

Trulli tells the team over the radio that the car is "unpredictable" at the moment

Vettel's helmet camera is giving a great view of the action, with lots of rubber flicking up off the front tyres. Vettel completes a 1m17.9s, while Hamilton does a 1m18.3s

A 1m18.7s lap from Massa on his latest lap, while Vettel does a 1m17.6s, Webber a 1m17.9s and Hamilton a 1m18.2s

That shows the sort of pace that each team has on high fuel. Webber a 1m17.6s and Vettel a 1m17.8s

Perez has stopped on the exit of Juncao and radios in to the team to say "I have no gears"

Replays show that he seemed to lose braking in to Juncao, running wide on to the grass and then rejoining on the hill up towards Subido dos Boxes. The car keeps rolling backwards as he can't leave it in gear

He's out of the car now, it looks like he has wedged the right rear tyre against the barrier to keep it from moving any further

Yellow glags still waving as the marshals struggle to push Perez's car to safety up the hill. Lap times are a few tenths off what they were now

Mark Webber almost runs in to the back of Bruno Senna in to Bico de Pato as the Renault lets him through

With the high-speed first and third sectors there are a lot of marbles being discarded on the side of the track, which we haven't seen for a few races

There appears to be a tractor on the scene to move Perez's car, but we may end the session under yellows if the car isn't removed in time

The track is clear again, so we should be able to compare the lap times more reliably

Vettel appears to be running the soft tyres until they give up, having completed 39 laps now

Button completes a 1m18.4s, as does Massa, while Schumacher does a 1m19.7s

The chequered flag is out, and the busy track will start to quieten down

Hamilton stuck behind di Resta on the final lap, as all of the cars were on track in the closing stages it was difficult for drivers to find clear air

Vettel's best lap from the long runs was a 1m17.1s, while Hamilton's was a 1m17.8s. Traditionally McLaren run a bit more fuel on a Friday, though

So that ends Friday practice for 2011, with Hamilton quickest over one lap and Vettel fastest on heavy fuel. To see what the drivers made of the day keep an eye on ESPNF1.com for the reaction. All of this running could turn out to be obselete if we get rain tomorrow and Sunday though, so make sure you join us tomorrow to find out. See you then
