Felipe Massa says Ferrari needs to be wary that falling to fourth in the constructors' championship is a real possibility.

Mercedes moved four points ahead of Ferrari at the Indian Grand Prix and Lotus is now just 24 points adrift in the standings with the races left. While Ferrari has been talking about the fight for second place, Massa said qualifying in Abu Dhabi - where he was eighth and team-mate Fernando Alonso 11th - proved the team is the slowest in that battle.

"The car is that one, this is the car we have and we know that it's slower than the Mercedes and the Lotus," Massa said. "We know that we're fighting the best and doing the best we can to finish in front of these two teams but they have a quicker car than us. So we need to be a little bit lucky as well to finish in front of Mercedes because today they're fighting for the first three places and we cannot.

"We need to be a bit lucky as well with the results at the end of the races and not just with Mercedes but with Lotus. Maybe we need to be lucky to get up to second place again but we cannot forget that maybe we can go down to fourth place. But I will try everything I can to help the team. That's what I really want to do for Ferrari and for myself. I think it's very important to do the very best position I can for me but also for the team."

Asked about the prospect of beating both Mercedes and Lotus in Sunday's race, Massa said Ferrari needs to be realistic.

"I am very confident that we're going to try to do that but it won't be easy, for sure. We have to have our feet on the ground. I'm confident, I'm very positive that we can fight with them but we'll see."
