Gareth Steenson celebrated signing a new Exeter Chiefs deal with a 16-point haul in their 36-10 victory at La Rochelle in the European Challenge Cup.

The bonus point win puts Chiefs top of Pool 2 after three games and extends their winning run to seven matches in all competitions.

Steenson, who earlier on Thursday committed himself to the Sandy Park outfit until 2018, added a degree of comfort to the scoreline but it was about more than his boot as Adam Hughes, Brett Sturgess, Byron McGuigan and Fetu'u Vainikolo all ran in tries.

Hughes got Chiefs up and running in the try stakes on the half-hour mark, capping off a fine break from McGuigan, before Sturgess crashed over shortly after.

Although the hosts hit back with a try from Jean Pascal Barraque before the break, Steenson's boot kept them at arm's length before McGuigan and Vainikolo crossed over late on to secure the bonus point.
