Hansen hails All Blacks' 'spirit'

Nehe Milner-Skudder shouldn't attempt to rush through checkout at the All Blacks' London hotel this week, as there's the small matter of the room bill to take care of first.

That's what room-mate Sonny Bill Williams believes, anyway, after the Test rookie spilled a pass to bomb a certain try midway through the second half of the All Blacks' gripping Rugby World Cup victory over Argentina at Wembley.

Williams just about turned the game on his own after taking to the field in the 45th minute as a replacement for Ma'a Nonu. The code-hopper made a massive impact with 11 runs, a clean break and a series of amazing offloads to help wrestle momentum from the Pumas, and provide the platform for the All Blacks' 26-16 win. But not before the defending champions were forced to endure some testing moments, something Milner-Skudder's fumble had only amplified.

"He's my roomie, so he might have to fix up the room bill, won't he," Williams said with a chuckle post-game. "I was telling the boys out there that I've been giving crap all week about this bad haircut that he got; so I better lay off him.

"But like I said earlier to the boys in there, Nehe played outstandingly and it's awesome to see as he was at the Dogs [Bulldogs National Rugby League club) as well; he's an ex-leaguie. I said before that coming from Super Rugby, the Super Rugby tournament, he was my favourite player to watch and things haven't changed. It's awesome to see him do his thing out there, and a couple of passes probably didn't stick for us as a whole but it's something that we can work on."

While Williams missed out on a try-assist to Milner-Skudder, he will receive a mark on the stats sheet for Sam Cane's try - which helped to kill off the South Americans. dogged resistance. But the replacement back-rower, too, was guilty off a fumble with the line wide open.

"It was a little bit of a relief more than anything," Cane said of his second chance. "Aaron Smith gave me a pass a few minutes earlier which I probably should have taken, and that would have been a try as well. So, yeah, I was just the man to finish off that one, all the work had been done on the far side.

"I'm not sure exactly [what happened first up] but I knew the replay was coming up on the big screen and I wasn't looking at it. I was trying to forget about it as quickly as I could."

That wasn't an easy feat, either, with the pro-Pumas crowd at Wembley ensuring both Cane and Milner-Skudder had no place to hide. The passionate South Americans chanted throughout, and were sure to boo All Blacks skipper, and first-half villain, Richie McCaw at every opportunity.

Williams said the on-field atmosphere was among the best he'd experienced.
