Toulon ensured it was a day to remember for debutant Quade Cooper as they destroyed Montpellier 52-8 at Stade Mayol.

The home side ran in eight tries, including a hat trick for wing Josua Tuisova, with Cooper starting at fly-half a week after finishing second with his Australia teammates to New Zealand in the World Cup final.

Cooper was given a guard of honour by home fans before the game but put in a low-key performance against an weak Montpellier side.

Former Northampton lock Samu Manoa opened the scoring with his first touchdown for his new club, while Lachie Turner snatched a double and Steffon Armitage and Sebastien Tillous-Borde each grabbing a try.

Elsewhere, Pau edged past Agen 33-31 to claim victory in the battle of the new boys.

Last season's Pro D2 champions were cruising on the hour mark after running in tries from Mosese Ratuvou, Sireli Bobo, and Julien Fumat, but were forced to cling on as Agen staged a spirited fightback.

However, two quickfire tries from Tamaz Mchedlidze and Clement Darbo with just over 10 minutes remaining were not enough to snatch a victory for the Top 14's second-bottom side.

Toulouse matched Toulon's try-scoring efforts as they crossed eight times in their 52-12 thrashing of Grenoble. Former England international Toby Flood was on the scoresheet, along with Louis Picamoles, Timoci Matanavou, and Sebastien Bezy brace. France youngster Gael Fickou touched down for a hat trick.

La Rochelle romped to a 38-3 victory over Oyonnax, running in four tries from Pierre Aguillon, Lepani Botia Veivuke, and a brace for flanker Afaesetiti Amosa.

Brive beat Bordeaux 16-3 at Stade Amedee-Domenech, with wing Guillaume Namy touching down for the game's only try on 56 minutes.
