The combative back-rower Ashley Johnson was one of the shining lights in an otherwise disappointing Super Rugby campaign for the Cheetahs in 2011. Drawing praise from various circles for his no-nonsense approach to the role, Johnson was called up to the 49 man South Africa training squad for the 2011 World Cup.
Having been a midweek Springbok in 2009 - on their northern hemisphere tour - Johnson was selected at No.8 for their opening Tri-Nations Test of 2011, against Australia in Sydney.
