Young represented England at Under-16 and 18 level and played for Durham School in the final of the Daily Mail Cup at Twickenham in 2006. Two years later, in 2008, Young made his Newcastle Falcons first team debut and helped his side take the Middlesex Sevens title that year.
Also in 2008, Young earned an England Sevens call-up for the Murrayfield leg of the IRB Sevens World Series and made his debut for the Saxons against Argentina off the bench in June 2009. Young soon became one of the first names on the team-sheet at the Falcons and formed a solid partnership with New Zealander Jimmy Gopperth before the scrum-half announced in June 2011 that he would join Leicester Tigers for the 2011-12 season.
