Lydiate targets Six Nations comeback

Wales have received a huge boost ahead of the 2013 Six Nations following the news that star flanker Dan Lydiate could potentially be fit in time for their opening clash.

Rob Howley's men face Ireland on February 2 in Cardiff and they will be under pressure to record a victory as they are currently on a seven-match losing run. Lydiate, the 2012 Six Nations Player of the Tournament, appeared to be a doubt for the campaign after he broke his ankle back in September.

The Dragons were reluctant to put a time frame on the flanker's recovery but the original prognosis meant he was a doubt for the forthcoming Six Nations. But Dragons boss Darren Edwards is optimistic that Lydiate could be ready for Wales duty sooner rather than later.

"He is on course for the start of February," Edwards told Wales Online. "It wouldn't surprise me if Dan has a half of rugby for us and Wales throw him straight in. He's that important - we saw how much he was missed during the autumn internationals."

Wales will already be without Rhys Priestland for the Six Nations and they are also sweating on Ashley Beck's fitness after he limped off against the Dragons on New Year's Eve. James Hook is also currently injured but he should be fit for the Six Nations.
