George North is winning a race to be fit for Northampton's play-off campaign after he trained for the first time in seven weeks on Wednesday.

North, 23, took a break from rugby after he suffered his third head injury in five months against Wasps at the end of March. He was also concussed when playing for Wales in November and February. He saw a neurosurgeon who recommended a month's rest before further assessment.

Alex King, the Northampton attack coach, said: "George is continuing to improve and is making good progress. The specialist is happy with how things are going and we hope that George will be involved again this season."

He will not be in the squad to face London Welsh on Saturday, but provided he does not suffer a recurrence of the headaches that have plagued his recuperation, North could feature against Leicester Tigers on May 16 or in the play-offs.

"George's health is absolutely paramount," King continued. "We will make sure that when he does play, he will be 100 per cent. When he is fit to resume his full duties, he will be part of the selection process."

Northampton will enter the play-offs, which begin on May 23, looking to retain their Premiership crown. A victory at Franklin's Gardens on Saturday would secure top spot and a home draw in the play-offs, which would give the club the option of resting players in the final match of the regular season against second-placed Leicester.
