A surprise contender has emerged to become the next France coach - Sir Clive Woodward.

Philippe Saint-André will leave his post following the Rugby World Cup and L'Equipe reports Woodward is on the final eight-man shortlist to replace him and met with the French Rugby Federation (FFR) last week.

While Woodward, who guided England to the 2003 Rugby World Cup, is in the frame, the favourite for the post remains Toulouse's Guy Noves. He was offered the job in the wake of the last World Cup but opted to stay with Toulouse but widespread reports suggest if the FFR turn to him again, he will struggle to turn it down again.

Noves and Woodward are on a shortlist which also includes ex-Montpellier coach Fabien Galthie and Bordeaux-Begles' Raphael Ibanez.
