National Australian club competition takes shape

The Queensland Rugby Union and Canberra Vikings have forged the way for a national rugby competition with the Vikings to play in the Brisbane club competition next year.

Canberra was unceremoniously dumped from the Sydney competition this year, but have been welcomed with open arms north of the border for a new 10-team Brisbane competition.

"The Vikings will be a fully-fledged first grade side, playing home and away in the Brisbane competition," Queensland Rugby Union chief executive Steve Thornton said.

"It has to be good for club standards, but it's also not where we want to finish. We want a national club series."

The Canberra team will travel to Brisbane every fortnight. The Tuggeranong Vikings club in Canberra will meet most of the cost of this plus the cost of hosting the Brisbane clubs.

"The QRU must be commended on their foresight to include a Canberra side after the Vikings were axed from Sydney after six years," ACTRU chief executive Mark Sinderberry said.
