Johnson was born in Dusselldorf, Germany and played for Chinor, Reading and Coventry before joining Exeter Chiefs, making his debut against Sedgley Park in 2007. In 2010 he helped Exeter to promotion to the Aviva Premiership.
After a storming first season in the Premiership with Exeter, where they confounded the doubters and cemented their place in the top-flight, Johnson was called up to the England Saxons for the 2011 Churchill Cup. He played at openside and shone under Stuart Lancaster.
Despite the media predicting a difficult second season for Exeter, they once again laughed in the face of those who doubted them and qualified for the Heineken Cup. Johnson shone in the back-row alongside James Scaysbrook and was called up to the England squad for their tour to South Africa. He won three caps, where his work-rate and industry made up for the absence of Leicester's Tom Croft.
