Cusworth sacked as Worcester director of rugby

Les Cusworth today paid the price for Worcester's crushing 42-0 defeat by second division leaders Rotherham last weekend when he was axed as director of rugby at Sixways.

Former England and Leicester fly-half Cusworth will not be involved in coaching duties, pending further talks about his future with Worcester chairman Cecil Duckworth.

Multi-millionaire Duckworth has put Worcester chief executive, ex-England and British Lions manager Geoff Cooke, in charge of team affairs until the end of this season.

Cusworth, one-time England coaching assistant to Jack Rowell, will play no part in preparing Worcester for their remaining four Premiership Two fixtures.

The Rotherham reversal left Duckworth's club six points behind the Yorkshire outfit, effectively putting pay to their fading title hopes.

This season's second division winners will tackle the bottom club in Premiership One over a two-leg play off next month with the winners of that game probably Rotherham against Bedford guaranteed lucrative top-flight status next term.

"Mr Duckworth believed that a change in direction was necessary to try to lift the team for its remaining matches this season," said Worcester, in a statement released this morning.
