Tykes' tilt at sevens title boosted by Bachop
Leeds
July 25, 2000

Former London Irish fly-half Stephen Bachop will assist Leeds Tykes' director of rugby Phil Davies train their Middlesex Charity Sevens squad.

The All Black and Samoan international, who left the Irish exiles at the end of last season, will bring all his vast experience to the tournament on August 12.

The team, which has been entered as a company, Leeds Rugby Ltd, will be made up of a combination of league and union players from the Tykes and the Rhinos.

In the coming season the Rhinos' big aussie-born back Graham Mackay will be the most significant player making the switch to union for the winter.

He will join other junior Rhinos players in the Tykes squad after the Lincoln Financial Group Rugby League World Cup in which he will play for Scotland.

One player who will not be in the Tykes side is Bachop's fellow former London Irish team-mate and Samoan international Isaac Fea'unati.

Leeds had the hard hitting back rower snatched from under their noses by Rotherham for the forthcoming season having been positive they had agreed a deal.

Rotherham, the team which pipped Leeds for the Allied Dunbar Premiership title last year and went on to win their place in the top flight, have entered the Middlesex Sevens, as have a host of other top clubs including London Irish, NEC Harlequins, London Wasps, Saracens, Bristol and Leicester, among others.

The first round draw for the sevens is:

Northampton Saints v London Welsh
Leeds Rugby v Saracens
Sale Sharks v British Army
Harlequins v Bristol
Penguins v Rotherham
Wasps v Samurai Rugby
London Irish v Newcastle Falcons
London Nigerian v Leicester Tigers

The winners stand to walk away with £50,000 with £20,000 for the runners-up.
