The capture of this South African lock was a crucial move by Leeds prior to the 2009-10 season. Wentzel proved to be one of the most successful locks in the Premiership and played a big part in the team avoiding relegation.
Wentzel signed for Leeds after two seasons at Leicester where he met the club's coaching team of Neil Back and Andy Key before they moved to Headingley. They appointed him captain and his ball-winning authority brought an edge to the play of the Yorkshire club.
Wentzel had arrived in Leicester from Italian club Benetton Treviso in the summer of 2007. His form at Welford Road was good and he was an almost ever-present figure in the first half of the season.
Though he suffered an ankle injury he returned fit to play in the play-offs before ending the season in the Premiership final at Twickenham. Before his European travels, Wentzel played Currie Cup rugby for Boland Cavaliers and gained Super 12 experience at the Blue Bulls and the Cats, winning Test caps against Scotland and France in 2002.
