Sale Sharks fly-half Danny Cipriani was rushed to hospital on Wednesday night after being hit by a bus during an evening out with his team-mates.

The 25-year-old was treated for concussion after being knocked down in Leeds city centre at the end of what The Sun newspaper described as a 'marathon drinking session'. It said paramedics rushed to the scene after the incident with the windscreen of the bus shattered as a result of the collision.

In the aftermath of the incident, Cipriani's manager James Williamson told the newspaper: "Danny's spending the night in hospital. X-rays and scans will be carried out overnight. He's obviously in pain. He was running across the road and just misjudged the speed of the bus."

Williamson later added: "At the moment there doesn't seem to have been any serious damage done. We don't how long he will be out for. It looks like he has been a lucky boy."

Cipriani and his team-mates were reportedly heading to the final bar of the infamous Otley Run pub crawl - The Dry Dock - when Cipriani was struck. An onlooker tweeted: "Every bit of the bus front window is smashed to pieces -- imagine what the guy looks like."

Student Molly Bridgeman, 18, said: "The front right corner of the bus was caved in. There were four police cars there. It was horrific."

A spokesperson for the bus company said: "A pedestrian suddenly ran into the road and collided with a First Bus travelling at a safe speed. The police have investigated this incident and have reported that First and its driver are not at fault. We understand the pedestrian is an England rugby international, and we wish him a speedy recovery."

The Sharks, who recently secured their Premiership status for next season, have one game left in this year's campaign against London Wasps a week on Saturday.
