Deacon Manu is a veteran prop who was born and raised in New Zealand but would go on to captain Fiji.
Manu grew up in Taranaki but it was with Waikato that he made his name as a front-row of real promise, eventually earning himself a deal with the Chiefs. He made his Super Rugby debut in the opening round of the 2011 campaign and ultimately spent five years playing for the Chiefs before eventually leaving to join the Scarlets in 2006.
Manu proved an instant hit in Llanell and buoyed by his good form he made it known to Fiji's selectors ahead of the 2007 World Cup campaign that he was eligible for selection through his mother, even though he had represented New Zealand at under-age level as well as lining out for New Zealand Maori in their 2005 clash with the British & Irish Lions.
In the end, Manu was overlooked but he was eventually called up by the Fijians two years later and lined out against Scotland in their end-of-year meeting at Murrayfield in November 2009. Manu has been a mainstay of the side ever since and is now poised to skipper his adopted nation in the 2011 World Cup in the land of his birth.
