Four men have been questioned by French police following a machete attack on three of Clermont Auvergne's players.

Aurelien Rougerie, Julien Pierre and Benjamin Kayser were all hospitalised after they were set upon in the early hours of Sunday morning by 12 men. The players were leaving a local nightclub, according to reports, and were attacked with machetes and swords.

Three other people were wounded in the attack as they attempted to help the Clermont players. Reports in the Daily Telegraph say the four men who have been detained are aged between 20 and 25.

Pierre required surgery on cuts to his hip while Rougerie and Kayser were released from hospital on Sunday. Jean-Marc Lhermet, Clermont's sporting director, described the attack as "unexpected" and "brutal" and added: "No one was expecting that. The evening had gone really well."
