The helicopters will have to wait.

Recently-retired All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw won't be taking to the skies just yet with the two-time Rugby World Cup winner set to test his outdoor skills in a 550km adventure race.

McCaw will form part of the Cure Kids team alongside New Zealand Rugby Players Association chief executive Rob Nicol in the week-long event in New Zealand's Tasman region.

"We know we are in for one heck of a challenge that will push us all to the limits mentally and physically," said the 148-test veteran.

"I know we definitely won't be lacking for motivation by supporting such a great cause like Cure Kids but it is definitely going to be a true test of our grit, determination and resilience."

McCaw announced his retirement from professional rugby late last month, the veteran No.7 bowing out of the game on the ultimate high - a World Cup triumph.

Asked what he would do next, McCaw revealed he would pursue his other great passion besides rugby and look to gain a professional helicopter licence in Christchurch.

But that will not be his sole focus for at least the first part of next year with the Godzone race set down for early April.
