Australai's victory over Russia was marred by a tournament ending injury to winger Drew Mitchell.

The Wallabies winger was cut down by a hamstring injury in the second-half of Australia's 68-22 victory at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Australia ran in 10 tries, including two from Mitchell, as they confirmed their progress into the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup.

Mitchell, who only just made the World Cup squad after recovering from a dislocated ankle, is unlikely to be reappear in the rest of the tournament, adding to an already lengthy injury list for the Wallabies.

"Obviously he's bitterly disappointed it's happened. But he was very positive in the change rooms and all the boys rallied around him," said captain James Horwill. "He wants us to go on and do the job we're here to do."

Should Ireland beat Italy in the final clash of Pool C, Australia will face South Africa in the quarter-finals and Wallabies coach Robbie Deans says the Springboks are fininding their form and will pose a massive threat.

"South Africa have shown they're very much World Cup exponents. They're building nicely," he said. "They've shown an ability to get up so the World Cup really suits their ability."
