New Zealand upset in Dubai 7s
December 6, 2002

The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby 7's is set for a spectacular final day tomorrow with the world's biggest rugby
nations set to fight it out for the Emirates International Trophy.

Champions New Zealand suffered a shock 19-17 defeat at the hands of Samoa
but England, South Africa and dark horses Argentina all came through today's action unscathed and will join Fiji, Wales, Australia and Samoa in tomorrow's quarter-finals at the Dubai Exiles Ground.

"I don't want to make excuses but out of our 15 contracted players, eight
are not here," said New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens. "Teams raise their
game to play us and Samoa certainly did that tonight."

The result now means the All Blacks meet England in the quarter-finals after they secured first place in their pool with three wins over Canada, the Arabian Gulf and Wales respectively.

South Africa coach Chester Williams was pleased with his first day's work,
which included a 19-7 win over Australia. He said: "It's always pleasing to come through the first day and we're looking forward to tomorrow."

England, who won their Battle of Britain with Wales 33-0, got better as the day went on and coach Joe Lydon was a happy man: "We may lack experience
with this side but we will be there or there about."

The 15,000-seater stadium at the Dubai Exiles Ground was close to capacity
by early afternoon and fans attending Saturday are advised to arrive early.
Entrance is Dhs100 which includes the Rugby Rock, a concert held behind the
North Stand featuring British band Angels.

England recorded their second win in the IRB Sevens in Dubai this afternoon after they beat the Arabian Gulf by 49-5.

Joe Lydon's side scored seven tries with Richard Haugthon (Saracens) and Ben Gollings (NEC Harlequins) grabbing a brace each and Paul Sampson (London Wasps), Rob Laird (London Wasps) and Ryan Peacey (Saracens) also getting on the score sheet.

All seven tries were converted by Ben Gollings.

England won their opening game beating Canada 26-5.

The tournament, which launches this season's International Rugby Board world series, saw England begin in style as tries from Simon Amor, Ben Russell, Rob Thirlby and Sale Sharks forward Magnus Lund gave them a comfortable victory.

Harlequins' Ben Gollings, a star performer during England's sevens exploits last season, kicked three conversions.

Elsewhere on day one, South Africa pipped Australia to first place in their pool although both go through to the quarter-finals.

And Fiji and Argentina complete the quarter-final qualifiers with the Pumas getting the better of the Fijians in their pool clash.
