Furter: we couldn't keep up the pace
October 14, 2003

Namibian captain Sean Furter admitted his part-time team ran out of steam against Argentina.

The Africans were overpowered by the impressive Argentine scrummaging machine and conceded two penalty tries among the 10 Argentina eventually scored in their 67-14 romp.

But Furter was able to look back with pride to a half-hour period in the first half during which his side conceded just eight points before eventually collapsing in the face of massive forward pressure.

"Argentina are a professional side and we aren't," said the powerful number eight. "What happened in the second half is the kind of price you have to pay for that.

"I am really proud of the forwards for standing up to the Pumas, particularly in the first half but we just couldn't keep up the pace.

"They are extraordinarily strong and beat us quite badly up front in the end, which showed up our mistakes.

"We are disappointed with the defeat but hopefully we will come back stronger."

The tasks do not get much easier for Namibia considering they have to face Ireland at Aussie Stadium on Sunday, before meeting hosts and holders Australia in Adelaide on October 25.

They could however look back on the two moments which drew the biggest cheers from an enthusiastic 17,000 crowd when centre Du Preez Grobler and scrum-half Hakkies Husselman crossed for tries towards the end of each half.

For Argentina, it was a welcome win after their opening-night reverse to the Wallabies last Friday and keeps them on course for a showdown with Ireland on October 26 which will determine who advances to the quarter-finals.

"We wanted to put up a better performance than we did on Friday and I believe we did that," said skipper Nicolas Fernandez Miranda, one of the 14 changes made by coach Marcello Loffreda.

"Our forwards are our strength, so it made sense to use them."
