History is firmly on England's side ahead of their Rugby World Cup opener against Argentina in Dunedin.

England have won 10 of their 15 meetings since the inaugural clash in 1981 with their most recent success a 16-9 victory at Twickenham in 2009. Argentina's most recent victory came the same year with a 24-22 victory in Salta ensuring the spoils were shared in a two-Test series.

The Pumas' first win came in 1990 when they edged England 15-13 in Buenos Aires and in November 2006 they recorded an historic first win at Twickenham. A breakaway try from Federico Todeschini powered the Pumas to a 25-18 win that helped lay the foundation for a memorable World Cup campaign the following year.

The two sides have met once before in the World Cup in Durban during the 1995 tournament in South Africa. On that day, the boot of Rob Andrew proved to be the difference with England conceding two tries but knocking over six penalties and two drop-goals on their way to a hard fought 24-18 win.
