Disappointment for Dobriskey on tough morning for GB

There was disappointment for Lisa Dobriskey as she failed to qualify from her heat in the 1500 metres at the World Championships in Daegu, on a disappointing morning for British athletes.

Dobriskey, the silver medallist in the event two years ago, was considered a strong medal prospect but found herself caught out with a lap to go and, after appearing to trip slightly at one point, only managed to finish second last in her heat - in a time 13 seconds off her personal best.

"I realised I was in trouble with about 300m to go down the back straight and I think I panicked a bit and pressed to hard and then that was it," said Dobriskey. "I thought I was coping well with it (the injury) but obviously not. I'm very disappointed."

Domestic rival Hannah England fared better however, running nearly a second slower than Dobriskey but nevertheless managing to win her heat in a time of 4mins 13.45s.

"It felt really good," England said. "I saw it was the first six to qualify and you think you should be okay but then you see the start list and think 'Oh dear'. But I have to stop putting those girls ahead of me."

Six of the 11 Team GB action failed to qualify from their heats, with Martyn Rooney one of the few to make it through in the 400m along with 'Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius.

Nineteen-year-old pole vaulter Holly Bleasdale was unable to reach the final after failing all three of her attempts at her first height of 4.25m, while team-mate Kate Dennison looked to be on course after clearing 4.50m until a shin injury forced her to withdraw.

Elsewhere, Lawrence Clarke failed to progress from the men's 110m hurdles. Andy Turner (second in his heat) and William Sharman (fastest loser) did progress, however.

Unfortunately the ratios were in reverse for the women's 100m, as both Laura Turner and Anyika Onuora were dumped out after difficult showings in the opening round. Beijing finalist Jennifer Kwakye did make it through, however, as she continues her return from a difficult period of injuries.

"It was good, I'm through that's the main thing and we'll take it from there," said Kwakye. "There's definitely more to come from me, if there's not I'll be very, very disappointed."
