Mo Farah justified his decision to back up his heroic effort in the 10000 metres in the 5000m by cruising into Sunday's final at the World Championships.

The Brit, who was run down late in the 10000 by Ibrahim Jeilan, revealed he had been suffering from blisters in the days since Sunday's final. After seeking out medical advice, Farah was given the green light to run and he eased through - filling second place in his heat behind Imane Merga.

Farah posted a time of 13:38.03 - almost five seconds slower than fastest qualifier - USA's Bernard Lagat. Ireland's Alistair Cragg came through in fifth in his heat to make the final.

Chris Tomlinson jumped out to 8.02 metres to qualify for the final of the long jump, but Greg Rutherford failed to join him in the final after damaging a hamstring.

Jenny Meadows laid down a marker by taking first place in her heat in a time of 2:01.11. South Africa's Caster Semenya eased through to the semi-finals in a time of 2:01.01, while Britain's Emma Jackson made it through as a fastest loser and Marilyn Okoro quaified in her own right.

Goldie Sayers will compete in the javeilin final after throwing 62.19 in qualifying.

Oscar Pistorius led South Africa off in the 4x400m and his team made it through in third in their heat, while the GB team also qualified.
