Ennis not ready to accept Denise Lewis omen

Jessica Ennis is refusing to believe in omens ahead of London 2012, after she broke the British heptathlon record on Sunday.

Ennis became only the seventh woman to break the 6900 points barrier, registering 6906 in Austria. That was enough to beat Denise Lewis' 12-year British record of 6831.

Lewis was the last British female to win Olympic gold in the seven-discipline event, and she broke the British record weeks before her 2000 triumph in Sydney. Can Ennis repeat the feat? The 26-year-old is trying not to get carried away.

"Yes, Denise got the record the year she won Olympic gold but I'm not thinking about that yet," Ennis said. "It will take a big score in London and I wanted to get 6900 or more.

"I'm so happy to have got that score. I've got the British record and I'm so proud."

Ennis' victory saw her beat world champion Tatyana Chernova by 132 points, while Olympic champion Nataliya Dobrynska was almost 600 points adrift. Ennis had been coming up second-best in recent outdoor and indoor events, but she is now convinced she will win the big one this summer.

"Last year gave me a reason to work hard," Ennis said. "Now hopefully I'll get it right in London."
