Proctor breaks British record as Ennis toils

Shara Proctor laid down a marker for her rivals ahead of London 2012 as she smashed the British long jump record at the Aviva Trials in Birmingham.

Proctor secured her Team GB spot with a huge leap of 6.95m to break Beverly Kinch's 29-year-old national record, set back in 1983. Her performance outshadowed that of heptathlete Jessica Ennis, who struggled with her run-up to finish outside the medals.

Ennis, who won the high jump and hurdles events on Saturday, made just one legal jump from six attempts, with her third-round effort of 6.27m good enough for fourth behind Lorraine Ugen and Jazmin Sawyers.

However, there was heartbreak for former European silver medallist Jade Johnson, whose Olympic dream faded after she could only finish ninth.

World bronze medallist Andy Turner will be at the mercy of the Olympic selectors after he missed out on automatic qualification in the men's 110m hurdles. Despite a fast start, Turner could only finish third as youngsters Andrew Pozzi and Lawrence Clarke came through to deny Turner, who will now wait on a third discretionary spot.

Holly Bleasdale made a timely return to form as she set a new British record with victory in the pole vault, putting a sluggish start to the outdoor season firmly behind her to win with a leap of 4.71 metres.

Perri Shakes-Drayton qualified for her first Olympic Games after she defended her 400m hurdles title at Alexander Stadium. In a thrilling race, Eilidh Child looked to be on course for victory, but stuttered on the final hurdle and lost momentum, although did enough to seal her qualification with both women finishing inside the Olympic 'A' standard.

Martyn Rooney fended off a stern challenge from Conrad Williams to win the men's 400m. Williams led the way coming into the final straight, but with Nigel Levine closing the gap, Rooney dug deep to snatch victory in a time of 45.93.

Lisa Dobriskey boosted her hopes of a place at this summer's Games after finishing second in the women's 1500m. Dobriskey, a former world silver medallist, has returned from a health scare after being diagnosed with lung blood clots. She is yet to hit the 'A' qualifying standard and was well off the pace of race winner Laura Weightman, who destroyed the field in a time of 4:18:83.

James Ellington booked his Olympic ticket with a commanding victory in the men's 200m. Ellington, who attempted to auction himself on eBay last year in a bid to raise funds, fulfilled his Olympic dream with victory in a time of 20.57 seconds, while Christian Malcolm produced a late charge to snatch second.

Eilish McColgan, daughter of former world 10,000m champion Liz McColgan, qualified for her first Olympics with victory in the 3000m steeplechase, while Jo Pavey won the women's 5000m to qualify for her fourth Games.

Meanwhile, Robbie Grabarz, ranked second in the world in 2012, secured his Olympic spot by winning the men's high jump with a leap of 2.28m. Margaret Adeoye and Anyika Onuora (women's 200m), Laurence Okoye (men's discus) and Andrew Osagie (men's 800m) all booked their place in the team.
