Jessica Ennis is set to stick with the heptathlon, setting to rest rumours that the Olympic champion might make a switch to the hurdles after London 2012.

The 26-year-old ran a personal best 12.54sec in the 100m hurdlesn in the opening round of the seven-discipline event, but turned down the opportunity to enter the individual event at the Olympics following her heptathlon triumph.

Ennis' time would have been good enough to finish fourth in the Olympic 100m hurdles final - won by Australia's Sally Pearson in an Olympic-record time of 12.35sec - and would have been good enough to win gold in Beijing four years ago.

Nevertheless, Ennis has committed to the heptathlon for the foreseeable future as she prepares to return to competitive action as the Olympic champion.

"I have not really thought about next year or given the World Championships in Moscow much thought," wrote Ennis in her column for the Times, "but I can confirm I am still going to be a heptathlete.

"I won't be switching to the hurdles any time soon."
