Double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah ended his glorious season on a high note with victory over two miles at the Great North City Games on the Newcastle-Gateshead quayside.

Farah was content to settle in behind Australia's Collis Birmingham for the majority of the trip, before pulling ahead to win comfortably in a time of 8:40.04.

"He dug in early on. That was tough," Farah told BBC Sport. "It's been hard work since the Olympics, but this run in front of home fans was one to enjoy."

The 29-year-old was one of the British stars of London 2012, storming away to take 5000m and 10000m gold at the Games.

"We will never have another summer like this," Farah said. "We cannot do this again. It's been a perfect summer of sport.

"We have had the Olympics and Paralympics on our doorstep, but then there's also been Bradley Wiggins winning the Tour de France and Andy Murray winning a grand slam [the US Open]. Brits just don't do that."
