Double Olympic champion Mo Farah was recognised for a stellar year as he was voted European Athlete of the Year for a second successive season.

The 29-year-old became the first British man to win an Olympic distance title when he stormed to victory in the 10,000m at London 2012, before adding the 5000m crown a week later to become the first man to do the distance double on home soil.

Farah, who also successfully defended his European 5000m title in Helsinki, is only the second athlete to win the award two years running after Swedish triple jumper Christian Olsson in 2003 and 2004.

He will receive his award at a ceremony in Malta on October 13, when Jessica Ennis will be crowned female athlete of the year in a British double celebration.
