Bleasdale and Dasaolu signal European intentions

Holly Bleasdale and James Dasaolu were two of Saturday's stars at the British Athletics European Trials, with Bleasdale leaping to the top of the world pole vault rankings.

Dasaolu claimed the men's 60m sprint title as he capitalised on the absence of Dwain Chambers, who had to withdraw from the event due to a back injury.

The weekend's event in Sheffield doubles up as the British Indoor Championships and the European trials, with places up for grabs for next month's European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg. Chambers still hopes to be picked despite Saturday's absence.

Bleasdale was the star of the show as she cleared 4.77m to win the pole vault event, and the 21-year-old is predicting another triumph when she gets to Gothenburg.

"I'm pretty confident I can go there and win gold," said Bleasdale, who failed to live up to the hype when finishing outside the medals at London 2012.

"When I jumped 4.77m I knew there was a lot more even though I am still not quite clicking everything together like in training. Once I do that I will easily be clearing bars like that."

Dasaolu set a personal best 6.58 seconds en route to the 60m title, and Asha Philip clocked 7.15s to take the women's title. Christine Ohuruogu did not even make the final.

Elsewhere, Andy Pozzi suffered further hamstring problems in the 60m hurdles heats. Pozzi encountered the same problem during the Olympics and faces more time on the sidelines.
