Rutherford wins on Manchester appearance

Olympic champion Greg Rutherford was one of many British athletes to enjoy positive performances at the Great City Games in Manchester on Saturday.

Rutherford, victorious in the long jump on that memorable evening in the Olympic Stadium last summer, claimed victory in the long jump in the city's Albert Squad after a best jump of 7.99m - beating compatriot Chris Tomlinson by a full 30cm.

Elsewhere, Britain's Perri Shakes-Drayton romped to victory in the women's 200m hurdles - while Olympic gold medallist Allyson Felix was first across the line in the 150m.

Rutherford, however, was the star of the show - after coming third in his first Diamond League meeting of the season last weekend.

"It wasn't a bad performance," Rutherford told the BBC. "I had a few problems at the start but I gave it everything in the last jump and, while I was really keen to get over 8m, 7.99m I will take. Overall I'm pretty pleased."

Shakes-Drayton took her event in a time of 25.74 seconds, with Eilidh Child coming home third.

"The more I was running, the more I got into it," Shakes-Drayton said. "I will do this again next year. Any event my coach puts me into I will put 100 per cent into it."

Elsewhere, France's Christophe Lemaitre won the men's 150m in 14.90s as Dwain Chambers finished fourth - with wily veteran Kim Collins winning the 100m sprint.
