Ennis-Hill casts doubt on World Champs appearance

Jessica Ennis-Hill has revealed she will head to the World Championships in Moscow only if she is in contention for the gold medal - despite making a successful comeback from injury on Tuesday night at Loughborough.

The golden girl of British athletics has missed the majority of the summer after suffering ankle and heel problems, and on her return to competitive action the Olympic champion threw a lifetime best in the javelin and was victorious in the long jump.

However, she admitted afterwards that the injuries continue to hamper her, and with the World Championships less than a month away revealed she will not go to the event if not fully fit.

"It's pain. It's one little bit that's really painful. When I compress it and when I'm pushing off it, it hurts," Ennis-Hill said.

"If I had one event to prepare for then maybe it would have been a bit easier, but having to train for seven events and get all the work done that I needed to get done, it just hasn't happened unfortunately. I want to be competitive, I don't want to go to just enjoy it. I want to contend for the gold medal."

Despite the worries, Ennis-Hill was glad to get her campaign underway, even at this late stage of the year.

"I am happy to be back, it's been a while," she said. "It's been really frustrating. I didn't think I'd be opening up my season in July, and practically the end of July."
