Jessica Ennis-Hill is set to be sidelined for up to 15 weeks with the Achilles injury which has ruled her out of the World Championships in Moscow.

The Olympic heptathlon champion confirmed on Wednesday she will not be participating in the event after failing to overcome the problem.

The face of British athletics struggled at the Anniversary Games at London's Olympic Stadium last weekend - finishing fourth in the 100m hurdles and placing eighth in the long-jump - and only made her return to action in Loughborough a fortnight ago after not competing since her Olympic triumph.

And the Achilles injury will now see Ennis-Hill out for around 15 weeks, with her coach Toni Minichiello revealing the severity of the problem.

"Achilles tendons are awkward and there's a period of rest [involved]," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "If we're lucky then we're looking at a 12 to 15-week recuperation period.

"When she didn't respond well after the London Diamond League, the position was that it didn't make sense and you're probably going to cause her more damage and lose the remaining years of her career to struggling with the injury.

"As a coach I'm not prepared to take that kind of risk so decisions are made and we pulled her at that stage."
