Tyson Gay tested positive for steroids

American sprinter Tyson Gay tested positive for a banned steroid according to the BBC.

The news Gay had failed a drugs test at the US World Championship trials in June emerged last month but until now there has been no confirmation of the substance involved.

But the BBC has seen the letter sent to Gay by the US Anti-Doping Agency which states "the sample had an adverse analytical finding reflecting values that are consistent with the administration of a steroid of exogenous [external] nature".

If this proves to be the case then Gay will be banned for two years, the maximum under current regulations. Although this will change soon to four years, Gay will not be hit with the longer term.

Gay, who also failed an out-of-competition test in May, said in July that he was an innocent party. "I don't have a sabotage story," he said. "I basically put my trust in someone and was let down. I know exactly what went on, but I can't discuss it right now."

The BBC added that Gay, who has worked on anti-doping campaigns in the past and volunteered for extra testing, is co-operating fully to try to reduce his sentence.
