Three Spanish athletes test positive
Three Spanish athletes have been temporarily suspended after testing positive, the country's athletics federation has confirmed.
The federation were notified on August 30 by AEPSAD, Spain's anti-doping agency, of the positive tests from the Spanish athletics championships.
However the athletes are protected from having their names revealed while they are under investigation in line with Spain's new anti-doping law. Their names and bans will be made public if the investigation confirms the athletes have doped.
According to World Anti-Doping Agency rules, two of the detected substances carry lengthy bans.
The tests were the first conducted by AEPSAD since being granted greater powers to dispel the notion that Spain is soft on doping, an image that is believed to have hurt their failed bid to hold the 2020 Olympics.
"Obviously every time an adverse finding comes to light which could lead to a severe punishment it is a reason for sadness," AEPSAD president Ana Munoz said.
"Because it means that there is an athlete who did not want to respect the rules. At the same time, it is a sign that work well done ... bears fruit."
