Pistorius murder trial to be partially televised
Oscar Pistorius' trial over the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp can be partially televised, a South African judge has ruled.
The trial begins next Monday, more than a year after double-amputee Pistorius, who competed in the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, shot dead model and reality TV star Steenkamp.
Pistorius claims he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder at his Pretoria home on Valentine's Day in 2013, with state prosecutors alleging the killing was premeditated. Steenkamp was found lying on the bathroom floor with three gunshot wounds.
Pistorius' defence lawyers had argued that allowing cameras in court could prevent him having a fair trial. But Judge Dunstan Mlambo said: "The applicants ... are permitted to set up equipment in accordance to specifications ... to obtain a video and audio recording of the permitted portions."
It will be the first time in South Africa's history that a criminal trial has been broadcast live. However filming of close-ups and private conversations will not be permitted.
Pistorius faces a minimum of 25 years in prison if convicted by a judge at Pretoria's High Court.
Earlier this month on the first anniversary of her death, Pistorius said he was "consumed with sorrow" over the incident.
He also faces charges of illegal possession of ammunition and two additional gun-related charges.
