Adam Gemili finished third in the men's 100 metres as he ran a season's best time at the Diamond League in Rome.

He clocked a time of 10.07 seconds to finish behind race-winner Justin Gatlin (9.91s) and Nesta Carter (10.02s), with British world 60m champion Richard Kilty finishing last in ninth place.

"It's always in every sprinter's sights to get that 10-second barrier. It will come eventually," Gemili, who finished fifth in the 200m final of the 2013 World Championships, told BBC Sport.

"It was my first proper international race and I did well. I have progressed from last week and hopefully I will get quicker and quicker as the season goes on."

Gatlin, who finished serving a four-year doping ban in 2010, continued his winning streak to add to his triumphs in Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing and Eugene, setting the year's best time in Beijing (9.87s).

World and Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finished eighth in the women's 100m, with Tori Bowie posting a personal best time of 11.05s to win the race.

World champion LaShawn Meritt recovered from losing in a photo finish last week to win the men's 400m as Britain's Nigel Levine could only manage seventh place.
