Johnson-Thompson out of Commonwealth Games

Heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson has been forced to pull out of the Commonwealth Games after suffering a foot injury in training.

The 21 year old is the world No.1 and was a contender to win the gold medal in Glasgow, but has been advised by medics to withdraw from the event as competing would put too much strain on her foot.

"I'm absolutely devastated that I'm not going to be able to compete at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow," Johnson-Thompson said.

Johnson-Thompson scored a world-leading 6,682 points at the Hypo-Meeting in Gotzis, Austria, last month, to go third on the British all-time list and looked primed to follow in the successful footsteps of Jessica Ennis-Hill.

"I was so looking forward to competing in another home games and this time as one of the favourites," she added.

"All the advice is telling me that I risk long term damage if I compete in a heptathlon in just over a week's time and I have to take that advice for the sake of my career."

Johnson-Thompson aims to be fit in time for the European Championships - where she is scheduled to compete in the long jump.

"I really hope to be able to compete in the long jump at the European Championships next month but it doesn't take away how gutted I am that I won't be at the Commonwealths," she said.
