Muir misses out on 1500m final in Zurich

Laura Muir was unable to put her disappointing Commonwealth Games behind her as she failed to qualify for the final of the 1500m at the European Championships in Zurich.

The 21-year-old just missed out on a medal at her home Games in Glasgow in July after she made contact with the foot of one of her rivals and lost her momentum as she ended up finishing second-last.

Ranked third in the world this year, she was determined to fight for a medal at the European Championships this week, but instead she suffered further heartache after finishing sixth in her heat in Switzerland.

"That's pretty gutting" Muir said. "I knew it was going to be tough but I thought it should be more straightforward.

"It's disappointing to come out of that and the other race was faster. Even though I wasn't in the top four I knew it would go on times so I ran that last 100m as hard as I could to give myself the best chance possible.

"When I saw the time at the end I thought there's a good chance the second heat can go faster than that and it did."

There were no such problems for Commonwealth Games silver medallist Laura Weightman, who finished fourth in her heat. Hannah England also qualified as a fastest loser after finishing behind Weightman.

Desiree Henry and Ashleigh Nelson both set personal bests to reach the semi-finals of the women's 100m, with Asha Philip also qualifying.

Tiffany Porter, who won bronze at the World Championships in Moscow last year, was quickest in the women's 400m hurdles to reach the semi-finals of the 100m hurdles.

"I'm really happy with it," she told BBC Sport. "I just hope to keep getting better in every round. I am always most nervous before the first round, so I was really pleased to go out there and get it out of the way."

Matthew Hudson Smith, who ran the final leg of the men's 4x400m to seal the gold medal for England at the Commonwealth Games, made it through to the semi-finals of the 400m. Martyn Rooney qualified with the second-quickest time of the day and will also be joined in the last four by Conrad Williams.
