Meadows urges England to lay down Ashes marker

Jenny Meadows has urged her fellow athletes to maintain their golden run, and lay down a marker for England's cricketers by winning the battle with Australia, at Saturday's Great North City Games.
The European and world 800 metres medallist has been part of a glorious year for British athletics - Team GB achieved their best performance at the European Championships - and she is desperate for that to continue at the weekend.
England, captained by European hurdles champion Andy Turner, face an "Ashes" clash with Australia in a series of events on the streets of Gateshead. And the event arrives ahead of England's much-anticipated Test cricket series Down Under, which begins in November.
"The Aussies I hear are taking this pretty seriously and so are we," Meadows told the Mirror. "I don't want to let myself down or let England down. British Athletics is really thriving, we want to keep that going.
"I've loved watching the Ashes over the years. It would be nice to put a marker down for England this weekend."
Meadows will make her final appearance of an injury-disrupted year at the Great North City Games.
