The Games are 'on a knife-edge'

England have become the latest country to throw their support behind the Commonwealth Games by announcing they will send a full team to Delhi.

Commonwealth Games England and its 17 member sports "unanimously agreed'' that they will go to the Games, a statement said, and this comes after Team Wales were given assurances that the venues and athletes village are "fit for purpose".

The England team management said in a statement: "Commonwealth Games England and its 17 member sports today unanimously agreed that they will go to the Delhi Games. "CGE's chef de mission, Craig Hunter, and our team in Delhi, are now seeing the improved levels of resourcing which are required to resolve the significant operational issues, but we will continue to monitor the situation daily to ensure the Village and stadia are safe and fit for purpose.

"The board continues to press the Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games Federation for assurances on both the stadia and the accommodation as well as liaising with the British Government. At all times the safety and security of our team is paramount.''

Organisers of the Games have been confronted with a series of setbacks in the build-up, with reports emerging of unfit conditions in the Athletes' Village.

To compound the misery, the chaos was intensified when a portion of the roof in the weightlifting arena collapsed.

But the Games, which appeared on the verge of disaster, have been given the green light after a series of guarantees about safety and improvements to the athletes village were made. Sheila Dikshit, chief minister of the Delhi government, has engineered "concerted action" to resolve the outstanding problems, pleasing both the Wales and Scotland teams.

Team Scotland's representative Jon Doig said: "We are heartened that Sheila Dikshit has personally taken control of the situation and ensuring that the necessary additional resources are brought in, including support from the Delhi hoteliers association to address standards of cleanliness and hygiene and oversee quality control.

"We have continued to make progress addressing the maintenance and operational issues within our own accommodation block and things are looking much better. Therefore subject to a number of assurances from the organising committee being realised over the next 24 hours, we feel we will be in a position to confirm tomorrow that our team will travel as scheduled on Saturday.''

Wales boosted tournament organisers by confirming that they plan to play a full part. "The Commonwealth Games Federation has received assurances from the Delhi 2010 Organising Committee that all venues and village are fit for purpose," Team Wales said in a statement.

"We are confident in the assurances that have been provided. The advance party will now be moving into our accommodation and we look forward to welcoming our athletes in the coming days."
